Here we go again!

I guess since it is the fifth day of 2006, I should do my goals for the year and such.

1) Expand my literary horizons. Read 100 books. Finish my two novels (Draft for Obituary by March. Draft for Drive by June). Write another NaNoWriMo. Maybe take some classes.

2) Don't Worry, Be Happy! Lose some weight. Exercise. Get some of the clutter out of my head. Get a new JOB! Maybe start a new venture.

3) Gain some forward momentum. Dive into change. Do something different. Change the unhappy to happy.

100 books!

if you read 100 books this year you'll be my hero. i'm baffled by how i'll squeek out 50 by december, good luck!

Re: 100 books!

You too!

100 books?

Whoa that's like 2 books a week? That's seriously hard core. I was thinking of doing the 50 book challenge until I realized that's a book a week plus I don't have the same level of selection here. So I'm going to start with 25.

Any idea on what you plan on reading?

Re: 100 books?

Right now I'm finishing Memoirs of a Geisha and I will be moving on to The Secret Life of Bees. After that, I haven't figured it out yet.

Re: 100 books?

I just reread it. How do you like it? It's gotten some flack for being historically inaccurate. Other than that. I thought it was an interesting, well written story, with high reread value.

Re: 100 books?

I liked it. It didn't necessarily get flack for historical inaccuracy, but the geisha that he interviewed for the book to derive experiences from sued him saying that stuff that happened in the book never happened to her. He countered by saying that the book is fictional and that the main character in the book is not supposed to be her, anyway.

I would definitely reread it someday. Now, I have to start The Secret Life of Bees!

I remember how you feel about bees so I read the amazon description. Sounds interesting. Hope you''l post about it.
I didn't know he was sued but the kind of historically inaccurate flack I was talking about was stuff like this: http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/en/beijing/features/2005_25/playing-the-part.html

Re: 100 books?

I don't necessarily agree with that assessment. I think Golden went to great lengths to show that a geisha was NOT a prostitute at all. Secondly, how can you get an impression of modern day geisha from a book set from 1919-1960?

Still, most of this criticism did stem from the geisha he interviewed that sued him (Not saying she was the only one, but still).

*SHRUGS* I actually thought the portrayal of the geisha in the book were better than most as far as stereotyping Asian women.
